WAYNE, NJ (November 3, 2011) – Toys“R”Us, Inc. has named the leadership team for its retail business operations in Southeast Asia and Greater China, following the recent announcement of its new joint venture agreement with Li & Fung Retailing. With this agreement, the existing Toys“R”Us business operations in the region, which had previously been licensed, are now majority owned and controlled by Toys“R”Us, Inc.

Monika Merz, currently President and CEO, Toys“R”Us, Japan has been named President, Toys“R”Us, Asia. In addition to providing ongoing leadership for the Toys“R”Us businesses in Japan and Australia, Ms. Merz’s role has been expanded to include oversight and further development of the company’s operations across seven markets throughout Asia. Ms. Merz continues to report to Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys“R”Us, Inc.

Pieter Schats has been named Managing Director, Toys“R”Us, Southeast Asia and Greater China. Prior to this, Mr. Schats served as CEO of Toys LiFung (Asia) Limited, which previously operated the Toys“R”Us business in Asia under a licensing agreement. In his new capacity, Mr. Schats is responsible for all operations and business activities for the company’s 90 wholly owned stores in Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. He also provides support for the company’s 14 licensed stores in the Philippines and Macau. Mr. Schats reports to Ms. Merz.

Ms. Merz joined Toys“R”Us, Inc. in 1996 as Vice President and General Manager, Toys“R”Us, Canada. She served in this role until 2000, when she was promoted to President, Toys“R”Us, Canada, Ltd. In this capacity, she introduced the company’s first integrated Side-by-Side stores, which combine Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores under one roof. In November 2007, Ms. Merz assumed leadership of Toys“R”Us, Japan, where the company operates nearly 170 Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores, representing the largest number of wholly owned stores in the company’s international portfolio. In 2011, Ms. Merz’s role was expanded to include responsibility for the company’s nearly 40 stores in Australia.

As Chief Executive Officer for Toys LiFung (Asia) for over nine years, Mr. Schats was instrumental in growing and expanding the Toys“R”Us business and brand in the licensed markets. Prior to his tenure at Li & Fung, he served as Group Chief Executive Officer for Next Media Group in Hong Kong.
