Play With Purpose

Bringing #PlayWithPurpose to Children in Need

Studies show that play at an early age enhances the progress of a child’s development by 34%. However, many of the more than 15.5 million U.S. children living in poverty today are missing out on quality playtime because of limited family resources or knowledge about the importance of play.

Now through April 17, monetary donations are being collected in Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores nationwide and at to benefit the early childhood development programs of Save the Children – the leading nonprofit working to ensure every U.S. child is healthy, safe and learning – to bring learning through play to children in need in the U.S.

"Play Packs" Help Deliver the Fun of Learning

In addition to hosting the in-store and online fundraising and awareness campaign, Toys”R”Us is providing toys to Save the Children to create “play packs” for families involved in the Early Steps to School Success program. The toys and corresponding curriculum, delivered by early childhood coordinators, give parents the tools to foster a love of learning, the foundation for a child’s success in school and life.

Childhood Development Programs

Save the Children’s early childhood development programs support some of the most impoverished children in the U.S., as well as their parents. These programs include:

  • Early Steps to School Success – serving children ages 0 to 5 and their parents, providing the foundation of learning, reading and the importance of play through in-home visits and parenting groups.
  • Literacy/Healthy Choices Program – an afterschool resource for children in kindergarten through eighth grade that instills the importance of good nutrition, an active lifestyle and a love of reading.
  • SummerBoost Initiative – provides school age children the opportunity to flourish during the summer months with continued nutrition education, reading, mathematics and play activities while school is out.

Toys“R”Us, Inc. and Save the Children Partnership History

For more than a decade, Toys“R”Us, Inc. and Save the Children have partnered to bring awareness and funding to children in need in the U.S. and around the world.

Financial support totaling more than $7.6 million – including donations from customers, Toys“R”Us, Inc. and the Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund – has helped the organization provide thousands of blankets to babies in impoverished regions of the U.S., benefited Save the Children’s early childhood development programs and offered much-needed assistance during times of crises.

To kick off the 2016 #PlayWithPurpose campaign, the Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund awarded Save the Children with a $100,000 grant.
