Toys"R"Us and Toys for Tots Make The Holidays A Little Brighter

How will you play it forward this holiday season?

Few memories are more nostalgic for me than Christmas morning. As I take a trip down memory lane, I see my siblings and I perched eagerly at the top of the staircase with angelic looks plastered to our faces - slowly inching our way down the banister until our parents let us come downstairs. We tear down the steps in a frenzied stampede and dive headfirst into the pile of gifts – leaving a trail of destruction (and wrapping paper) in our wake. As Christmas morning wears on, my sister and I inevitably start fighting so my mom not so gently reminds us that plenty of kids don’t get toys on Christmas morning and if you don’t stop fighting I’ll give your toys to kids who will appreciate them. Ouch. This harsh reality promptly ends the fighting – as my sister and I exchange shocked looks and possessively clutch our Troll dolls.

Living in my little snow globe, it took me years to realize that my mom was right – too many kids wake up to nothing on Christmas morning.  The holiday season can be incredibly stressful especially for families who have little or no disposable income. But kids shouldn’t be bogged down by adult problems – they should never worry about how big or little a paycheck will be or who will pay the bills this month. Kids should… well… just be kids. It may sound simple, but it’s true.

For this reason, I’m proud to announce that Toys”R”Us is teaming up Toys for Tots to make the holidays a little brighter for families who need some help this holiday season. We know that the small act of receiving a toy under the tree can make such a difference, especially for those who may have lost everything in the wake of the recent hurricanes. That’s why, starting today, Toys “R”Us is collecting new, unwrapped toys at Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores nationwide and online at Toys for Tots coordinators will collect and distribute these gifts (and purchase toys with the money collected) this holiday season – creating lasting memories for families in need.

As Henry Butts, a coordinator from Volusia County told me, “I’ve visited houses where people have lost everything from floods or fires and then the marines show up with bags of toys -  it changes the whole dynamic of the family’s life. We give them hope and let them know they mean something to somebody.” So however you choose to give back, whether online or at your local Toys“R”Us it’s easy--and your contribution can go a long way to putting a smile on a child’s face and creating a lasting memory.

New this year, Toys“R”Us will donate $1 to Toys for Tots for every customer that takes advantage of the company’s all-new Price Match Promise (up to $1 million) now through Sunday, December 24. For more information about this program, visit
